Why You Should Have A Bucket List, Like, Right Now!

We all have things we want to do before we die. Some of us want to backpack across Europe. Some want to go skydiving or climb Mount Everest. We all have a mental list that we keep of all the things we want to do in our lives. And if you don’t, you are either lying or are living an extremely boring life.

What even is a bucket list?

If you haven’t seen ‘A Walk to Remember’, the obviously titled movie ‘The Bucket List’ with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, or have just been living under a rock for the past 100 years, then I would imagine what you have no idea of what I am talking about when I say the words ‘Bucket List’. Simply put, a bucket list is a list of things that you want to do before you- well- kick the bucket. Before you bite the dust. Meet your maker. Basically, before you die. Many people have it written down in an old journal, or somewhere deep into their Google Docs drive. As we live our lives, the goal is to cross off every item on the list.

I was first introduced to the bucket list by none other than MTV’s short-lived series ‘The Buried Life’. It was about this group of guys who traveled around the U.S. in an old school bus or RV and would come up with crazy ways to cross off the things they had on their bucket list. From asking Taylor Swift out for a date to crashing a Mardi Gras Float Parade, they definitely went to the extreme to cross things off their bucket list.

I think I was about thirteen at the time when MTV aired the show, but it did give me the idea to start my own bucket list. Granted that I was only an angsty thirteen-year-old, you could only imagine what was on my original bucket list. I’m not even sure where that list even is. But either way, since I was a teenager I’ve always had a bucket list. Yes, it has changed and grown over the past decade, but it is still the same list.

Everyone needs a bucket list in their lives. It pushes us to live adventurously and to get out of our comfort zone. It gives us the motivation to reach our goals and to become the best versions of ourselves. I would have probably never have done half of the amazing things I have done if it wasn’t for this concept of a bucket list.

My bucket list is over a hundred items strong right now. It grows and shirks as my life goes on. Once I cross something off my list another thing gets added on the list. When I crossed off ‘Go to Italy’ on my list, I added ‘Go to every country in Europe’ on the list where Italy used to be. It seems to me that my list is going to be extremely difficult to complete. It’s mostly my fault, but still.

It’s not enough just to HAVE a bucket list. You have to actually do the things that are on there. It’s one thing to write down everything you want to do with your life, but if you don’t have the motivation to finish the list, then what was the point of making it. Every list is made to be completed.

My bucket list is far from being complete. I am not sure what I am going to cross off next, or what I’ll wind up adding to the list. I don’t know where life is going to take me next, but at least I have an idea of what I want to do in my future adventures.
