Fall has always been my favorite time of year. However, since I have lived my entire life in Florida, I never got to experience the true “fall vibes’ ‘ all year ‘round. There’s no leaves changing colors, it’s still too hot to wear comfy sweaters and boots, and many people who have started occupying my little beach town moved here for the eternal summer, and don’t really like anything Fall related. It’s not really the vibe that I would get in some of the more northern states I visit in the fall months.
However, my favorite thing about fall is my all-time favorite time of the year- Spooky Season! I have always loved Halloween and everything a little creepy. If you have seen any of my recent home décor, you would know that I am still that 13-year old goth kid at heart. I love Halloween for many reasons. I like the scary stories, the dressing up, and of course the candy. If it was up to me, it would be Halloween all year. The way I see it, Halloween is a state of mind, not just one day.
This time of year always makes me happy. I always thought I was a bit weird for liking creepy and scary stuff, even outside of October 31st, even as I was getting older and it was “no longer cool to dress as an ax-murdering bride”. But, as recent years have passed, I have found that I am not the only person who loves scary stuff. With the rise of the True Crime genre around millennials and Gen-Z, dark humor, and the popularity of shows like “American Horror Story”, “Supernatural”, and “The X-Files”, it seems like almost everyone is exploring their spooky sides. In the past couple of years I have noticed that almost everyone is embracing the Halloween Spirit. I mean, if you think about it, Halloween really is the first major holiday to kick-off the holiday season.
There are many, many reasons as to why I love the spooky season. I love the energy and excitement it brings. I feel like people really let out their inner child whenever Halloween makes its way around. There are many ways that I celebrate my spooky-ness all year. Luckily, with my “weird” interests, I have been able to meet and connect with fellow people who share the same love for spooky season as I do. I have always had a love for all things dark, creepy, and a little weird. Just look at some of my dating history.
With all of the other Spooky Season people I have met, we all seem to have a lot in common that connects us to our love of the season. We might not have all of these things in common but if you are someone who loves this time of year, this is what you know to be true.
You love dark clothing, make-up, and a darker aesthetic
You don’t have to be a traditional emo or goth to love wearing darker colors. I know many people who wear only black that are huge balls of sunshine and rainbows and cannot handle scary movies. However, spooky people tend to gravitate towards more darker sides of the color spectrum in their appearance or even their home décor. These can include dark grays, deep reds, greens, coppers, tan accents, and of course black. These colors are usually your go-to choices with the occasional bright color to mix things up a bit. You most likely get your inspiration from Morticia Addams- the QUEEN of all things spooky and creepy.
Chances are you’re a Scorpio
The Scorpio (born between October 23 – November 22) is nicknamed “The Halloween Zodiac” for a reason. Not only does Halloween fall right in the middle of this zodiac season, but a lot of attributes and characteristics of Scorpios intersect with all the spooky vibes. Scorpios are usually very passionate, mysterious, intense, and a bit darker than most of the other zodiacs. Scorpios tend to be more accepting of the darkest parts of the people around them without any judgement, which may be why every Scorpio I know – including myself – isn’t turned away by the creepiness of spooky season. If you are not a Scorpio I would guess that you probably have a Scorpio somewhere in your ‘Big 3’- sun, moon, or rising.
You’re an Introvert
Many of the spooky season people I know come off as introverts, and occasionally ambiverts. Spooky people tend to keep a lot of single-person hobbies that include a lot of alone time and often have a creative element to it. whether it’s art, writing, reading, music, crochet, etc. there are usually moments of lull when it comes to introverts socializing. They tend to enjoy their own company over the company of many people at one time. Instead of a huge party with a lot of interaction, they would prefer being at home, with a hot beverage, and a cozy blanket.
The emo/goth phase was STRONG when you were growing up… and maybe still is
Growing up, everyone either went through an emo phase or they were mentally stable. There is no in-between. I know this is an on-the-nose observation, but I stand by it. ALL adult spooky season people had a phase in their teens years that can only be described as the piano intro to ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ by My Chemical Romance. You know the one.
Even if you are no longer rocking the fringed bangs, the rubber band bracelets, or beat up converse you doodle on with sharpie, you still express those parts of yourself in your adult life. I’ve seen your workout playlist! I know.
You love dark humor
Nothing will make me laugh more than a good joke about death. I don’t know why. Maybe I have become desensitized to it because of my trauma. I don’t know. I’ll have to check with my therapist about that. I just find certain ‘inappropriate’ things funny, especially if it’s us joking in a time where we’re supposed to be serious. Honestly, if none of my friends or family makes messed up jokes about my death at my funeral, I am coming back from the grave to do it myself.
There is never an excuse not to dress up
I look forward to Halloween because of all of the costumes and dressing up I get to do with all of my other friends. I will dress up for anything if I get the opportunity to. I am so glad that fancy dress parties have become more popular in the U.S. because it makes it feel like there is a little Halloween all year-round.
How is your true crime and/or local legend obsession going?
True crime has increased in popularity over the past couple of years. There are so many podcasts, documentaries, shows, etc. that have come out and each one is just as addicting as the last. Almost every single person I know likes some kind of variation of the true crime genre.
Spooky people not only love true crime, but a bit of the supernatural as well. There is something extremely eerie about the unknown. There are so many things that we don’t know about life after death or even about other creatures that have yet to be discovered by humans.
Being a bit spooky always made me feel a bit weird growing up. People would usually label me as the strange loner or that there was something wrong with me because I surrounded myself in dark horror and content. Liking horror movies, Scary stories, and all around spooky vibes are completely normalized in today’s society. I mean if Morticia Addams can be a spooky icon and be loved by so many people, we can all be too.
Spooky season people may be a bit weird to some, but they will always find their people who love it as much as they do. So be weird. Be spooky. But make sure you don’t summon any demons to cause chaos…. Unless it’s for a good cause!
Happy Spooky Season!
